Longest running Bollywood film in history runs for 20 years then is canceled!

It seems almost unimaginable and unbelievable, but it is true – the longest running film in bollywood history ran for a record-breaking 20 years!! (OK, slightly short of 20 years – 1009 weeks, which is actually 19 years and some odd months). The movie in question that takes the claim to fame? Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a 1995 Bollywood movie about a young man and woman who fall in love while on vacation in Switzerland. The girl however – who is from India – is already betrothed, and her father rejects her new-found love in favor of her long-standing betrothal. The romantic comedy clocks in at just over 3 hours (186 minutes), and is widely considered one of the best bollywood movies of all time – hence its continued featuring at the Maratha Mandir Theater in Mumbai.

Much to the dismay of locals however, recently the Maratha Mandir Theater, which had been so dedicated to showing the movie, decided to stop running Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. In response, the theater began receiving hundreds of phone calls requesting that the movie not be canceled – it seemed that everyone everywhere that heard about the movie’s cancellation was weighing in – and noone was happy about it.

Due to the tremendous outcry – the movie’s cancellation did not last very long – and much to the pleasure of Indian filmgoers everywhere, the theater started showing Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge again. The total amount of time the movie was out of the theater? 2 days!! 🙂
