Villager Maadhu and his wife (Deepti Naval) have four daughters. An eunuch promises Maadhu that if he agrees to give one of his daughters to Goddness Yellamma, his next child would be a boy. Maadhu agrees. His wife soon delivers a boy. A few years later, the eunuch takes away the eldest daughter, Roopa (Sonali Kulkarni), and, with her family’s acquiescence, makes her Yellamma’s devotee. The eunuch gets a customer for Roopa and insists that she sleeps with him. When Roopa resists, the customer rapes her. Disgusted, Roopa runs back home but her father is unwilling to take her back. She has no choice but to return to the eunuch. But since she refuses to entertain customers, the eunuch sells her off to Kasturibai, a kothewali.
At the kotha, Roopa sings and dances but doesn’t sell her body. She falls in love with Akash (Ravi Kissen), a dance teacher at the kotha. Akash, too, loves her but he is drunkard. When Roopa gets pregnant, Akash promises to come and talk to Kasturibai about marrying her. While Roopa waits, Akash simply doesn’t turn up.
She gives birth to a baby boy, Deepak, who grows up to become an excellent student. The school’s trustee, Ram (Jackie Shroff), is very impressed with Deepak. He insists on meeting Deepak’s mother. When Roopa meets Ram, she tells him that they live at the kotha and that she sings and dances for a living. Ram comes to the kotha to meet her and soon proposes marriage. Though Roopa is initially reculant, she agrees and they get married.
One day, Ram is badly injured while trying to save Deepak from being run over by a car. He is rushing to hospital. When Roopa reaches there, she finds Akash on the neighbouring bed. She confronts him and tells him that Deepak is his son. Ram overhears their conversation.
Does Roopa go back to Akash? How does Ram deal with Akash’s return? These questions are answered in the final scenes of the drama.
